stalling problem

its an 89 mustang 5.0 drives good, will only idle half the time, will be driving at speed when it comes time to slow down at about 1500 rpm the check engine light comes on then the car shuts down. if i start it back up it will run fine until it comes time to stop again. been having issues with the power steering pump making some noise but nothing to crazy. don't have anymore ideas. i do know that i only have a 160 degree t-stat and i was planing the throw some new plugs in it this week. anyone have any ideas?

1. Get rid of the 160 thermostat! Go 180, the 160 doesn't allow the engine to get up to operating temperature. This could be apart of your problem but,

2. The most likely culprit is a carbon'd up IAC or EGR. Remove them, blast them with carb cleaner, dry them off and re-install!

Almost every fox body I've ever owned (12 now...) has had idle issues at 1 point or another!

Agree
-dump the stat for a 180
-check the plugs / suspect loaded up due to running too cold
-clean IAC / t body as suggested

Your Idle Air Control is the cylinder-like looking piece attached to the front of your throttle body.

Looks like this (except shouldn't be cracked as the one below):

haha thanks i cleaned both of them, they were pretty bad, changed the t stat to a 180. the car still runs cool i think that it is because i have an aftermarket fan that was on it when i got it. the temp goes up and down a lot. if it sits for a bit it gets hotter but as soon as i drive it it cools back down. changed the spark plugs aswell. it stopped stalling but now chugs a bit every once and a while. still working on it.
