Boyd's "Crazy Horse" Coming Up for Auction

by CP Staff

December 6 – It began as a simple meeting between two car buffs in 1960, drawn together by a car advertised for sale. Tom Barrett was selling his 1933 Cadillac V-16 Town Car and Russ Jackson was interested. The two never came to terms on the Cadillac, as no deal was struck.

Their common interest, however, lead to one of the world's most prestigious and anticipated collector car auctions and expositions. In 1971, the two combined their talents to present the first classic car auction, featuring classics from their individual collections. Barrett's Mercedes 770 Phaeton created industry headlines, selling for $153,000 and grabbing the attention of collectors worldwide.

Russ Jackson passed away in 1993 and Tom Barrett in April, 2004. Craig Jackson, who had worked actively on a daily basis throughout the year and on-site at the event, took over the reins and led Barrett-Jackson to even greater success. In 2004, the auction presented nearly 800 cars with a 98.5% sales ratio, generating $38.5 million in sales in front of 185,000 attendees.

It looks like the 2005 auction will be at least as successful, as early car consignments for the January 25th to 30th event are up 400% over last year’s early registrants. "For the 34th straight year, collector car enthusiasts are showing increased confidence in buying and selling cars at the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction, especially evident in the high percentage of early consignments," said Craig Jackson, president of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company.

One of the exquisite cars already consigned for the Scottsdale auction is a 1966 Shelby GT350 Fastback, 289cid/306hp V8 with a 4-speed transmission that has been referred to as the finest 1966 Shelby GT350 in existence. Named "Crazy Horse" this fastback by Boyd Coddington was created on the popular "American Hot Rod" series on Discovery Channel.

The Ford Motorsports engine is mated to a C-4 transmission and Currie rear end. It features air conditioning, many hand crafted Billet components, 4 wheel disc brakes, tubular A arms, Magnaflow exhaust system, Gabe Lopez interior, one-off Billet wheels by Coddington, of course.

Almost forty other classic Mustangs are currently on the "No Reserve" list for Scottsdale. Included are Bosses, Mach I's and a 1968 Shelby GT500. Other Boyd Coddington works to be sold off include the "Whatthehaye" street rod and the "Alumatub" hot rod.

The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction will run from Tuesday, January 25 to Sunday, January 30, 2005 at WestWorld in Scottsdale, Arizona.
